AI Add-on credits
How Granular AI credits work: AI Add-on tiers from $20 a month, credit packs that never expire, which credits go first, and what happens when they run out.
Updated 2026-10-20
The AI Add-on (Granular Hosted) gives you AI models from many companies inside Granular, including Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini. You don't need your own AI subscription or any API keys (an API key is a password-like code that some AI companies give you). This page explains how it is billed and how its credits work.
Today that's 32 models from 9 companies. For what each model is good for and how many credits a typical request uses, see Granular Hosted models. In the chat, the model button groups them by maker and shows roughly how many credits a typical turn uses on each row.
Three separate things
Granular has three separate things you can pay for. You can have any mix of them, or none.
| What | What it does | How you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Pro plan | Lifts the limits in the app | Monthly, Annual or Lifetime |
| AI Add-on | Gives you AI models and a monthly credit allowance | Monthly, in three tiers |
| Credit packs | Adds extra credits that never expire | One-time top-ups |
The AI Add-on works on any plan, including Free. You don't need Pro to use it. See Plans and pricing for the Pro plan.
The tiers
The AI Add-on comes in three tiers. Every tier unlocks the same models. Only the number of credits differs.
| Tier | Price | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Base | $20 a month | 1,600 every month |
| Plus | $50 a month | 4,000 every month |
| Max | $100 a month | 8,000 every month |
The AI Add-on is billed monthly only. There is no annual or Lifetime version, because AI model costs change from month to month.
How credits work
A credit is the unit Granular uses to measure AI use. Each request to a hosted model uses some credits. Bigger models use more.
You can have two kinds of credits:
- Monthly credits come with your tier. They refill every 30 days. Unused monthly credits don't carry over.
- Pack credits come from credit packs. They roll over and never expire.
Granular always spends your monthly credits first. Pack credits are used only after your monthly credits run out, so the credits that never expire last longest.
See how many credits you have
- Open Settings → Billing & plan. Your AI Add-on line shows credits left.
- In a chat that uses a hosted model, the bottom of the chat shows AI credits and your balance.
Get the AI Add-on
- Open Settings → Billing & plan.
- Scroll to the AI Add-on section.
- Click the price on the tier you want, for example $20/mo for Base.
- Checkout opens in your web browser. Pay there.
- Go back to Granular. If you're signed in, the AI Add-on switches on by itself.
If you weren't signed in, you'll get an unlock code by email. Paste it into Have an unlock code? Add it here and click Add.
Switch tiers
- Open Settings → Billing & plan.
- In the AI Add-on section, your current tier is marked Your tier.
- Click Switch on the tier you want. You can also click Change plan on your AI Add-on line.
- A secure billing page opens in your browser and shows the exact price. Confirm there.
- Your browser shows a Plan changed page. Go back to Granular. Your tier updates by itself in a moment.
What changes and when:
- Moving up (for example Base to Plus) is charged straight away, for just the rest of the current month. Your extra credits are ready at once.
- Moving down (for example Max to Base) starts at your next renewal. You keep this month's credits until then.
Switching changes your one AI Add-on. You never end up paying for two tiers.
Buy credit packs
Credit packs top up your credits whenever you need more. They come in two sizes, at the same rate:
| Pack | Credits |
|---|---|
| $10 credit pack | 800 |
| $25 credit pack | 2,000 |
- Open Settings → Billing & plan.
- Scroll to Add credits, under the AI Add-on tiers.
- Choose a size. Use + and − to buy up to 10 packs in one payment.
- Click the price button. Checkout opens in your browser. Pay there.
- Check your email for your unlock code. If you bought several packs, they all arrive as one code.
- Back in Granular, paste the code into Have an unlock code? Add it here and click Add.
A credit pack always needs its code pasted, even when you're signed in. Credit packs are sold only inside the app.
Packs without a tier
You can buy credit packs without the AI Add-on. This is a good fit if you use AI only now and then. The pack switches hosted models on by itself, and you pay only for the credits you buy. Pack credits never refill on their own, so buy another pack when they run low.
If you get the AI Add-on later, your pack credits stay. They are used after your monthly credits.
When credits run out
When you have no credits left, hosted models pause. A card appears in your chat that tells you why and gives you a way to keep going.
- If you have the AI Add-on: the card says Your AI credits are used up. Click Buy a credit pack or Go to billing to add credits, or click the button to switch to your own AI (for example Switch to Claude, or Pick another model).
- If you were using free credits: the card says Your free AI credits are used up. Click Get the AI Add-on, Buy a credit pack or Connect your own AI.
- If your AI Add-on has ended: the card says Your AI Add-on has ended and its credits are used up. Click Go to billing to subscribe again, or switch to your own AI.
Your monthly credits also refill by themselves every 30 days while your AI Add-on is active.
Cancel the AI Add-on
- Open Settings → Billing & plan.
- On your AI Add-on line, click Manage.
- On the secure billing page that opens, choose to cancel.
Your AI Add-on keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for. After it ends, any credits you have left still work until you use them up. They just don't refill. Billing & plan shows how many you have left.
Cancelling the AI Add-on does not affect your Pro plan. They are billed separately.
Refunds
The 30-day money-back guarantee covers Pro plans only. The AI Add-on and credit packs are not covered. If something went wrong with a charge, email hello@granular.build.
