TL;DR mode

In short

Make long AI agent replies easy to skim: TL;DR mode ends each one with a short summary and folds the full answer just above it, ready to open whenever you want.

Updated 2026-10-20

TL;DR mode makes long agent replies end with a short summary, and the chat shows you that summary. The full answer is still there, folded into one line just above it. Click that line to read everything.

(TL;DR is short for "too long; didn't read", a common label for a quick summary.)

Before you start

Nothing to set up. TL;DR mode works with Claude, Codex and Gemini connections.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click General.
  3. Under Conversations, switch on TL;DR mode.

It takes effect from the next message you send, in every chat. It is off until you switch it on.

What you'll see

When a reply runs longer than about 120 words:

  • While the agent works, a faint line reads Writing full answer… with a word count and a pulsing dot. The latest line of the answer shows beside it so you can see it's moving.
  • When it finishes, that line becomes Full answer · N words ▸, folded. Below it, the TL;DR is shown as the reply.
  • To read everything, click Full answer. Click again to fold it.

Short replies, under about 120 words, show normally with no TL;DR.

The summary always starts with the outcome. If anything failed or is risky, that comes first. Any question the agent needs you to answer, or decision you need to make, is in the TL;DR, so you never have to open the full answer to find out what's needed from you.

Copying a reply

The Copy button on a TL;DR reply copies the whole thing: the full answer first, then TL;DR and the summary.

Older messages

Replies are folded only if TL;DR mode was on when you sent the message. Turning the mode off doesn't unfold earlier replies, and turning it on doesn't fold old ones.

Change or undo it

Switch TL;DR mode off in Settings → General. From your next message, replies show in full again.

Limits

  • The agent decides when a reply is long enough to need a TL;DR, using about 120 words as the guide. Now and then it may skip one.
  • TL;DR mode is one setting for the whole app. You can't turn it on for just one chat.

Troubleshooting

If a long reply shows "No TL;DR this time"
The agent finished without writing a summary. Granular shows the full answer open, so nothing is hidden. Your next long reply should have one.

If replies don't fold after you switch it on
TL;DR mode starts with the next message you send. Send a new message.

Questions

How do I make the agent's answers shorter?
Switch on TL;DR mode in Settings → General. Long replies then show a short summary first, with any question the agent needs you to answer, and the full answer folded above it.
Does TL;DR mode work with Codex and Gemini?
Yes. It works with Claude, Codex and Gemini connections.
Is anything left out of the full answer?
No. The full answer is everything the agent wrote. The TL;DR only adds a summary at the end.
Does it cost more?
The agent writes a few extra lines at the end of each long reply, so a long reply uses a little more of your AI allowance.
Does the agent still see the whole conversation?
Yes. Folding is only how the chat displays replies. The agent's memory of the conversation is unchanged.
