OpenRouter is a service that gives you hundreds of AI models from many companies with one account. Signing in to it connects it to Granular in one click: you approve in your browser, and its models appear in the model button under the message box. There's no API key to copy.

Before you start

  • An OpenRouter account (openrouter.ai) with credit, or a free model in mind. Messages are billed by OpenRouter, not Granular.

  1. In the row of controls under the message box, click the button that shows your current connection's name.
  2. Click Add your AI agent.
  3. Under Keys & providers, click OpenRouter (its tag says Sign in).
  4. Your browser opens OpenRouter's approval page. Sign in to OpenRouter if asked, then approve.
  5. Go back to Granular. The menu says Signed in to OpenRouter and the chat switches to it.

While Granular waits, the row says Approve in your browser… with a Cancel link. It waits up to 5 minutes.

What you'll see

  • An OpenRouter row in your Accounts list.
  • The model button under the message box lists OpenRouter's models, grouped by maker, newest first, with prices and other details where OpenRouter gives them. See Pick and pin models.
  • On OpenRouter's site, a new API key named Granular in your account.
  • If you use OpenCode or Pi, they can use this OpenRouter sign-in too, with nothing more to set up.

Change or undo it

Once OpenRouter is added, its row leaves Add your AI agent. Manage it from its card in Settings → AI accounts:

  • Reconnect: sign in again for a fresh key. It replaces the old one; you won't get a second OpenRouter account.
  • Manage key: opens OpenRouter's page for this key, where you can see usage, set a spending limit or delete it.
  • Sign out: asks "Sign out of OpenRouter? Its key is removed from this computer. Chats using it will need another account." Click Sign out to remove the key from this computer, or Keep it. To delete the key on OpenRouter as well, use Manage key first.

See Manage your AI accounts.

Limits

  • You pay OpenRouter for what you use, at OpenRouter's prices. Free models may be slow or limited.
  • The key is stored encrypted on this computer. It isn't listed in the Vault and isn't shown to the agent.
  • Prefer to paste a key yourself? Under Add your AI agent, click Custom provider and pick OpenRouter. See Connect other AI providers.
