Tool tabs

In short

Keep several web pages, files and terminals open in one chat with tabs in Preview, Files and Terminal. How to open, switch and close tabs, and why some pause.

Updated 2026-10-20

Preview, Files and Terminal each have their own row of tabs, so one chat can keep several web pages, files or terminals open at once. Each tool's first tab is always there and can't be closed. The other tabs open with + (or from a click) and close with their ×.

Before you start

Open a tool with its icon at the right of the title bar. See The Granular window.

The tab row

Every tool with tabs has the same row at the top:

  • Its tabs, left to right. The selected tab is outlined.
  • +, to open another tab. In Preview it offers New tab; in Terminal, New terminal and New in its own copy. Files has no +: a file you click opens in its own tab.
  • Full screen, on the right.

Brain doesn't have tabs. It has a Map / Notes / Roadmap switch instead. See Digital brain.

Switch, close and scroll

  • Switch: click a tab.
  • Close: click the × on the tab. With Preview or Files in use, ⌘W (Ctrl+W on Windows) closes the selected tab. It never closes the window, and does nothing on the first tab.
  • Use the keyboard: click a tab, then press ← or → to move to the next one. Home and End jump to the ends. Arrow keys inside a page, a terminal, the file list or a text box work as usual.
  • Lots of tabs: the row scrolls sideways. Use your mouse wheel over it. A soft fade shows on any side that has more tabs.
  • More options: some tabs have a ⋯ button (also on right-click), for example a terminal with its own copy.

Preview tabs

Each Preview tab is like a browser tab with its own address, Back and Forward, zoom and screen size.

Open a tab:

  • Click +, then New tab, and type an address or file path.
  • ⌘-click (Ctrl-click on Windows) or middle-click a link in a page.
  • Click a link that would open a new window.

What the agent does: it shows its work in Agent preview, and Preview comes to the front when it does. It can also open its own named tabs. If a tab is already showing the same site, it reuses that tab instead of opening another. The agent only closes tabs it opened itself, never yours.

Paused tabs

Every open web page uses memory, like a tab in Chrome. To keep Granular quick, only the tab you're looking at and the two you used most recently stay live. Others pause:

  • A paused tab looks dimmed, and the row says, for example, 2 tabs paused to save memory.
  • It keeps its address and history, and a picture of the page.
  • Click it to wake it. The picture shows while the page reloads.

A page that was in the middle of something, such as a form you were filling in, starts again when it wakes.

Zoom in the Preview

To make a page bigger or smaller:

  1. Click inside the Preview.
  2. Press ⌘+ to zoom in, ⌘- to zoom out, or ⌘0 to go back to 100% (Ctrl on Windows). Or use the Zoom out, Reset zoom to 100% and Zoom in buttons in the toolbar.

Zoom goes from 25% to 300% and is kept per tab. Outside the Preview the same keys zoom the whole app instead.

Pinching a trackpad, or ⌘+scrolling, is left to the page itself, so maps and design tools still zoom the way they normally do.

Files tabs

Click a note, text or code file in Files and it opens in its own tab, next to the Files tab. See Files for the details: opening in the background, the back button in each tab, and what happens past 20 open files.

Terminal tabs

Main terminal is the agent's. + opens New terminal or New in its own copy, and the agent can open its own tabs too. See Terminal.

Limits

  • One tool at a time. You can't show a page and a terminal side by side. Switch tools with the title bar icons.
  • Preview: up to 20 tabs in one chat. If the agent asks for more, it shows its page in Agent preview instead.
  • Files: up to 20 open files. See Files.
  • Terminal: extra terminal tabs don't come back after you quit Granular. Preview and Files tabs do.

Troubleshooting

If a Preview tab is greyed out
It's paused to save memory. Click it to wake it.

If ⌘W didn't close my tab
Click inside the Preview or Files first, so it has focus. The first tab (Agent preview or Files) never closes.

If the agent's page replaced what I was looking at
The agent shows its work in Agent preview. Open your own pages in another tab with +, and the agent won't use them.

If the page zoom changed the whole app instead
Focus wasn't in the Preview. Click inside the page, then press the keys again. Press ⌘0 (Ctrl+0) outside the Preview to put the app back to normal size.

Questions

Can I close Agent preview, Files or Main terminal?
No. They're each tool's home tab. Close the tool itself with its title bar icon instead.
Why does a Preview tab say it's paused?
To save memory, only the tab you're looking at and the two you used most recently stay live. A paused tab keeps its address and a picture of the page; click it to wake it.
Can I open several web pages in the Preview at once?
Yes. Each page gets its own tab in the Preview's tab row, and you can switch between them like browser tabs.
Do my tabs come back after a restart?
Preview and Files tabs do. Extra terminal tabs don't.
Does each chat have its own tabs?
Yes. Tabs belong to the chat they were opened in.
