Move a purchase to another account

In short

Granular purchase on the wrong account? A purchase stays with the account that adds it first and can't be moved in the app. How to avoid it, and get help.

A Granular purchase belongs to the first account that adds it. After that, you can't move it to a different account yourself. If your purchase ended up on the wrong account, email us and we'll help put it right.

How a purchase gets added to an account

A purchase is added to your account when:

  • you sign in on a computer where it's already switched on,
  • you buy it in the app while signed in,
  • you paste its unlock code while signed in, or
  • you bought it on the website and sign in with the same email you paid with, as long as no other account has added it yet.

Once a purchase is on an account, it stays there. Signing in later with a different email doesn't move it.

How it usually goes wrong

The most common cause is having two email addresses, for example a work one and a personal one:

  1. You pay for Pro with your personal email.
  2. On the computer where Pro is switched on, you sign in to Granular with your work email.
  3. Pro is added to the work email's account, because that account added it first.
  4. Later, you sign in with your personal email and Pro isn't there.

How to avoid it

  • Sign in with the email you paid with before anything else, especially on a computer that already has Pro.
  • If you have more than one email, pick one for Granular and stick to it.
  • When you buy in the app while signed in, the purchase goes to the account you're signed in to. Check the email under Settings → Account first.

How to tell which account has your purchase

  • When you sign in, Granular tells you plainly if something wasn't added. For example: "Your Pro · Monthly is already on a different Granular account, so it wasn't added to this one. It keeps working on this computer. Reply to your purchase email and we'll sort it out."
  • If you paste an unlock code that's on another account, you'll see: "This code is already on another Granular account." Nothing changes.
  • Signed in with the email you paid with? Open Settings → Billing & plan and look under Purchases with your email. A purchase held by another account reads Claimed by followed by a partly hidden email, like h•••@example.com. That tells you which account has it.

We also email the address that paid whenever a purchase is added to an account with a different email: "Your Granular purchase was added to the account <email>. Not you? Reply to this email."

What you can do

  1. Just use the account that has it. If the other account is also yours, sign out and sign in with that email. Everything works as normal. See Account and sign-in.
  2. Your purchase keeps working meanwhile. A purchase that couldn't be added to your account keeps working on the computer where it's switched on.
  3. Ask us to help. If it went to the wrong account, or to someone else's, email hello@granular.build (or reply to your purchase email). Tell us the email you paid with and the email you want it on. We'll look into it and help put it right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my purchase to another account myself?
No. There's no way to move a purchase between accounts in the app. Email us and we'll help.
What happens to my billing if someone else's account has my purchase?
If you paid for it, you can still manage the payment. Sign in with the email you paid with, open Settings → Billing & plan, and click Manage on the purchase to update your card, see invoices or cancel. Then email us so we can sort out who it belongs to.
Why does my code say it's already on another Granular account?
Someone, possibly you with another email, added it to their account first. Nothing was changed. Sign in with that other email if it's yours, or email us.
Does it matter which email I paid with?
It helps. A website purchase is added automatically when you sign in with the same email, as long as no other account added it first.
Can I give my Pro to someone else?
Not once it's on your account. An unused code, one no account has added yet, can be given away. For example, if you already have Pro, Granular refuses a second Pro code and keeps it unused so you can pass it on.
